Full Day
tour of London starts with a guided tour of Westminster
Abbey. Here, you see impressive monuments to kings, queens,
famous scientists, musicians, poets and the Unknown Warrior.
At the heart of the Abbey, you will see the Coronation Chair
made in 1301, and on which our kings and queens have been
crowned since 1066, and where many state weddings and
funerals have taken place*.
As the
tour continues your guide will point out the famous icons of
London, including Big Ben and the Parliament buildings,
Whitehall, Downing Street, the London home of the Prime
Minister, and Trafalgar Square where looking up you will see
Nelson on his column (202ft high) before visiting Buckingham
Palace for the colourful Changing of the Guard** ceremony.
Back on
our coach we see the exclusive district of Mayfair and
Piccadilly Circus, the heart of London’s West End with its
theatres, cinemas, nightclubs, restaurants and shops, before
reaching our traditional London Pub for your included lunch.
Your
afternoon starts with a visit to the City of London, the
world-famous financial centre that is dominated by the great
dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. The City of London was the site
of the original Roman city, founded some 2000 years ago.
Here you will see the Mansion House (home to the Lord Mayor
of London) and The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street (the Bank
of England).
The Tower
of London awaits. Here we meet the magnificent Beefeaters,
dressed in their Tudor uniforms. You will hear the legend of
the ravens and some spine-chilling tales from the Tower’s
900-year history. A visit to the Jewel House, which displays
the Crown Jewels, is a ‘must’.
Our Full
day finishes with a cruise on London’s famous River Thames,
during which a Thames Waterman will point out places of
interest along the way. Your cruise will end at Westminster
Pier where you rejoin your coach. |
DAY 04 |
London -
Cambridge - York - Darlington |
We meet
our Tour Manager then drive to Cambridge, described as the
'loveliest city in England' and home of one of England's
finest universities. We walk among the colleges, including
magnificent King’s College, then on to York. Exploring
inside the ancient city walls, we see the maze of narrow
medieval streets (including the quaintly-named ‘Shambles’)
and the 13th century Minster, England's largest Cathedral.
There's also time to browse in York's tempting shops before
we continue to our hotel for dinner. (D) |

past the romantic ruins of Jedburgh Abbey and across the
River Tweed, before we head for Edinburgh we staop at
Rosslyn Chapel as featured in the Da Vinci Code. Then onto
Edinburgh, the historic capital of Scotland. Our afternoon
guided tour shows us the best of the city of Edinburgh - the
stately Royal mile, ancient St. Giles Cathedral and 18th
century New Town. We visit the castle, dominating the city
from its rocky crag. Tonight, there may be the opportunity
to enjoy a grand Scottish night out, complete with haggis
and the skirl of the pipes. (B) |

Gretna Green, for centuries the destination of eloping
English lovers. We witness the traditional 'anvil ceremony'
in the blacksmith's shop, then cross the border into

Much of
today's London would still be recognizable to a Victorian
time-traveller - the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, the
imposing railway terminal at Paddington, King's Cross, St. Pancras and the exuberant Royal Courts of Justice. While
London continued to expand exponentially, it also pioneered
the infrastructure that makes a modern metropolis function -
drains, artificial lighting, hospitals, parks, schools,
public libraries and theatres - the world's first.
Underground railway, tramways - at first horse-drawn, then
electric - apartment blocks, town halls, a fire brigade and
last but not least, vast cemeteries, such as those at
Highgate, Brompton or Kensal Green.
The
birthplace of William Shakespeare, steeped in culture and
history. Set in the beautiful rural Warwickshire
countryside, on the banks of the river Avon. Using the
Stratford district as a base, you can enjoy the delights not
only of Shakespeare's hometown, but also the nearby
surrounding shire counties of Oxfordshire, Worcestershire
and Gloucestershire. Enjoy Blenheim Palace and the Cotswolds
to the south, Worcester and the Malverns to the west,
Warwick Castle and Henley in Arden to the north and all
within an hour's journey of Stratford itself.
Whatever
you like doing, you can do it in Bath. Culture and art? Bath
has dozens of museums and its streets are a living museum of
Georgian architecture. History? The Roman Baths are one of
the most complete ancient sites in the world, much of it
unchanged for 2000 years. The countryside around Bath is
among Britain's finest. Visit the gorgeous villages of
Castle Combe or Lacock, in which no house is less than 150
years old.
The
city's rich cultural heritage dates back to Roman times, but
the flavour of Viking Jorvik is still alive at the
outstanding Jorvik Viking Centre. York is dominated by the
imposing bulk of York Minister with its superb stained glass
windows. Explore one of York's other fine medieval churches,
and wander the narrow streets of the Shambles area.
Edinburgh, said the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, is what
Paris ought to be. Its magnificent architecture shifts from
the lofty buildings of its medieval Old Town, as they tumble
down the spine of the Royal Mile, to the grace of the
Georgian New Town. Above it all, in its towering splendour,
stands the Castle. Every step is a revelation - an alleyway
which reveals an ancient courtyard
Oxford
the City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for
its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it
has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th
century an established town although people are known to
have lived in the area for thousands of years
The
beauty of Cambridge is its compactness; a few steps in any
direction will take you past a piece of history, whether it
is the Anglo-Saxon tower of the tiny church of St. Benet’s
or the Cavendish Laboratory, the site of the first splitting
of the atom. See the apple tree that jolted Isaac Newton
into formulating the laws of gravity; wander through the
hushed courtyards of the Colleges that nurtured England’s
finest minds.
