Kyoto
Prefecture, located in the middle of the Main Island of
Japan, forms a long shape, extending from the northern coast
on the Wakasa Bay, through the Kyoto Basin, up to the
southern region bordering on kyoto and Mie Prefectures. The
northern coastal area by the Sea of Japan, which includes
the Sanin Seaside National Park and the Wakasa Bay
Seminational Park, is indeed a rich mine of natural
beauties, as Amano Hashidate (sandbar)--one of the scenic
trio of Japan--exemplifies. The city of Kyoto lies in the
Kyoto Basin, where old-time nature is well preserved, thanks
to the characteristics of Kyoto as a "Mecca" of Japan--a
country of history and tradition. In addition, the Hiei
Mountain, the riverside of Uji, and Kasagi Mountain in the
extreme south also preserve the rich nature as it was
before. Indeed, tourists from all over the
world converge exclusively on the city of Kyoto. But there
are a lot of old temples and worthwhile cultural assets
preserved in and around the city of Uji, whose quiet
beauties remind us of the long history of Kyoto. Moreover,
we should not miss the picturesque scenery of the Wakasa
Bay, as best represented by Amano Hashidate, and the simple
beauty of the mountains in Tango and Tanba.
Khajuraho, which has
lent its name to a complex of exquisite Hindu and Jain
temples, is a small town located amidst the forested plains
of Bundelkhand in north-central Madhya Pradesh. The
beautiful temples that dot Khajuraho are believed to have
been built by the mighty Chandela rulers in the 9th and 10th
century AD. The engravings on these temples are highly
sensual and erotic that depict in graceful forms intimate
scenes of the whole range of human emotions and
relationships. These sculptures congeal in stone a lyrical
paean to love and passion and reflect the Chandela
dynasty/’s immense appreciation for art.
Architecturally, the temples are built in the north Indian
Nagara style. The sculptor/’s fine skill and a sense of
imagination have given form to human emotion in the form of
spiritual and physical love. Every façade—wall, window,
pillar, and ceiling—is carved with figures of mythical and
historical origins, and while many of these depict
full-breasted, girdle-waisted women in forms of innocent
play, they also depict carnal love.
